Where To Stay

add to Travel Bag (NEW)

Reykjavík is not an extraordinarily large city. You can easily get from one side of the city to the other in about 15-20 minutes by car, unless of course you get trapped in an exceptional traffic jam! In other words, it doesn’t matter so much where in the city a traveler’s accommodation is located, if you are satisfied with commuting by taxi or a rented car. For those wanting to walk to business meetings, and go shopping and sightseeing, it is most likely that you will find a strategically positioned hotel - as long as you book your accommodation in time, especially for the summer months.

As could be expected, the most luxurious and expensive hotels are close to the city centre. It is, however, also possible to find reasonably inexpensive accommodation in that area. You might, for instance, opt for City Hotel, or Hótel Krían to name just two, or in the summer you could stay at Hótel Garður. If you want to pamper yourself in luxury, Hótel Holt, within walking distance from the centre, is a good choice. The hotel's founder and first owner was a passionate art collector and a part of his important collection is to be found in the hotel. Hótel Borg is in the centre itself, just opposite Dómkirkjan Cathedral and Alþingishúsið (Houses of Parliament). You might also want to stay close to the University of Iceland, in which case Hótel Saga, also a ten minute walk from the city centre, is perfect for you.

For those wanting to stay close to Reykjavík airport, Hótel Loftleiðir, Hótel Saga and Hótel Garður are the perfect choices. The same goes for those wanting to travel from Reykjavík by bus. The main bus terminal is within walking distance from these three hotels. Hótel Saga and Hótel Garður are also close to the National Library, the University of Iceland and the Nordic House.

If, however, you want to be close to all the recreational activities in Laugardalur, both Grand Hótel and Hótel Esja are extremely convenient. Staying there, you can walk to Laugardalur swimming pool, Ásmundur Sveinsson museum, Húsdýragarðurinn and Fjölskyldugarðurinn.

For those whose top priority is economy instead of central location, there are many choices. The number of establishments increases as you go further from the centre. However, because of Reykjavík's size, you will never be very far from the heart of the city anyway. The number of easily affordable places of accommodation is increasing rapidly, as tourism is growing in leaps and bounds. If you intend to stay outside the city centre, hotels such as Hótel Vík, Lykilhótel Cabin and Ísafold come to mind. Hótel Valhöll in Þingvellir is another option to consider. From there you can visit the historic site of the ancient Alþingi as well as some spectacular geological formations. From Hótel Geysir you can walk to the world-famous Geysir, the mother of all spouting geysers. It has been more or less dormant for decades, but after the great earthquake on 17 June, 2000, it has come to life again and is said to be spouting almost every day since. Hótel Örk is a luxury hotel in Hveragerði, only half an hour's drive from Reykjavík, but it is also conveniently located for those who want to visit the tourist attractions in the southern part of Iceland, such as Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir. If you want to relax and enjoy the mysterious wonders of the Blue Lagoon and the Reykjanes peninsula, Hótel Bláa Lónið is the ideal place to stay. For those wanting to explore the western part of Iceland without going too far from Reykjavík, Hótel Bifröst is a beautifully located hotel in the middle of a large lava flow. Another option for those wanting to stay in traditional surroundings, is Ensku húsin, located in a traditional fishing cottage. If you want to stay in a hotel in a small town there are two main options, Hótel Barbró in Akranes and Hótel Borgarnes.

As these examples show, a great variety of options are available as regards accommodation in Reykjavík and the surrounding areas. When determining which one to choose, the price range and the purpose of your visit should be the main factors you keep in mind. Have a pleasant stay!
